Backyard Transformation: From Dog Run to Fun!

Last spring, we made a game-changing addition to our backyard that completely transformed the way we use the space. Picture this: we went from a barely touched yard to a full-blown outdoor hangout spot—all thanks to a swing set. It quickly became the ultimate kid-friendly zone, and honestly, it was the best decision we could have made!
Here’s how it all went down: shortly after our little guy was born, Josh had to jet off on a business trip, leaving me at home with a newborn and a 4-year-old. Let’s just say, after spending way too much time cooped up inside, I had an aha moment. Our backyard needed some serious upgrades to make it fun and functional for the kiddos.
Now, let’s talk about the “before.” The previous owners had installed this dog run (you’re looking at the only existing photo of it, and trust me, that’s enough). It was a huge waste of space! So, we rolled up our sleeves, decided to rip it out, and replace it with something actually useful—a swing set!

Cue my little helper, who loved getting dirty and hunting for bugs while we worked. I swear, nothing makes a project more fun than having a 4-year-old by your side, completely in awe of every mud puddle and creepy-crawly discovery. Fast forward a bit, and here’s the finished product—ta-da! The swing set completely opened up the side yard and made it feel SO much bigger. It instantly became the go-to spot for outdoor play, and we use it all the time now!

We still have a few things to wrap up (because, let’s be honest, projects love to linger), and Josh has this wild idea to turn the old dog house into a playhouse for the kids. I’m not sold on that one yet—it’s giving me major “ew, gross” vibes. So, for now, the dog house just…sits there. But who knows, maybe I’ll come around one day!

Moral of the story? Never underestimate the power of a swing set and a little DIY spirit to totally transform your space! Plus, who doesn’t love a good mud and bug-filled adventure along the way?
