Demo Day: Turning Our New House Into a Home

The day after we closed on our new house, I was ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work. We had been going back and forth on flooring options for what felt like forever, so once we signed those papers, it was time to demo and get this place moving! We had already decided on a waterproof laminate from RevWood—it wasn’t the natural hardwood we initially dreamed of, but with three kids and a dog who love to rough up everything, it was the perfect choice for our growing, busy family.
First things first, the old bathroom vanities had to go. We had been shopping around for new ones and realized we needed to demo the old ones before we could continue the new flooring all the way to the wall. So, I grabbed my demo hammer and got to work. It was so satisfying tearing out the outdated mirrors, the built-in vanities, and all those ancient window treatments and curtains that had clearly seen better days. Every room felt like it was shedding years of bad decisions, one swing at a time!

Of course, all this destruction quickly led to quite the trash pile in our new side yard. Old mirrors, broken vanities, and enough old carpet and tile to make a mountain of debris. I knew I’d need to rent a dumpster soon, but honestly, there was something oddly rewarding about watching that pile grow. Every piece of junk that left the house brought us one step closer to turning it into the home we envisioned.
Meanwhile, the flooring crew was hard at work too. They made quick work of tearing out the mismatched carpets and tiles on the first floor, which all flowed into the kitchen and family room. I can’t even describe how much of a difference it made just getting rid of all those clashing floors. The house immediately felt more open and cohesive—like it was finally starting to breathe.
Seeing the transformation in real time was exciting. Even though the house was a mess with dust, debris, and demo piles, I could already picture how incredible it was going to look once everything was in place. Sure, we had a long road ahead, but after that first day of ripping out the old and prepping for the new, I knew we were on the right track.
This house is a huge project, but every swing of that hammer is one step closer to creating the home we’ve been dreaming of. And trust me—there’s no turning back now!
